Nordisk Musikbibliotekskonferens 17 - 19 juni 2003 på Musikhögskolan Ingesund, Arvika
INTERNET SESSION QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
1. I live in Tisted (Denmark). Are there
any viola teachers there?
[Answer - Try the Nordic Viola Society site at
www.nordicviola.com: it includes an e-mail contact name for enquiries.
Otherwise, try "Tisted" and "musik" in Yahoo Denmark. There is the contact
name for a local musician who may be able to help. There is a Danish
Association of Music Teachers, which has a web site at
www.dmpf.dk; e-mail
dmpf@dmpf.dk: they might also be able to help.]
2. I heard a piece by Poul Ruders at a concert the other day. How can I find
out what else he has written? And when is his music next being performed?
[Answer - there is a whole site devoted to Poul Ruders at
www.poulruders.net. The site has a contact name, so is probably suitably
authoritative for information provided by it to be accepted.
www.poulruders.net includes a list of CDs, worklist, and forthcoming
performances. Also: there is a good site at
www.dr.dk/musik, on which you
can also search under Ruders. There are 7 "hits" there for this composer,
including a note of a concert in St Petersburg on 11 June.]
3. Who publishes the music of Arne Nordheim?
[Answer: look for Arne Nordheim's name on the web, perhaps restricting your
search in the first instance to .edu sites. Nordheim's publisher is Wilhelm
Hansen, as reported by Schirmer music on its homepage. See also
www.kvasir.no (a useful Norwegian search engine) at
www.kvasir.no/c/art/music, which sends you to
www.arnenordheim.com via the
Norwegian Music Information Centre website at
www.mic.no. This is an
excellent site, with much useful information about performances, Norwegian
music organisations, etc.]
4. I'd like to contact the Finnish composer Kalevi Aho. Where does he live?
[Answer: Aho does not appear to have his own web site. Try the Finnish Music
Information Centre at
www.fimic.fi, or the Sibelius Academy site. The
Sibelius Academy site (at www2.siba.fi/Kulttuuripalvelut/music.html) has a
list of Finnish composers, from which you can find an e-mail address for Mr
Aho -- at
ahokalvei@hotmail.com.]
5. I'm interested in Max Reger's music, and have been told that there is an
article about it in the 2002 Svensk Tidskrift for Musikforskning. Is this
true? And can I get the article online?
[Answer: The Svensk Samfundet for Musikforskning has an excellent site at
www.musik.uu.se/ssm. There is a listing of the contents of STM there, which
will tell you that Per Broman has written an article entitled "Reger and
Riemann: some analytical and pedagogical aspects". Unfortunately, page
numbers are not given, nor is the article available online (STM-Online is a
different publication): so it will be difficult to get this article on
Inter-Library Loan. Maybe the Swedish RILM office can give you a full
reference?]
6. I want to write a dissertation on music in Trondheim. Has anyone already
done so?
[Answer: As far as I can tell, there is no published, online list of music
dissertations written about Norway. I would recommend contacting Trondheim
university to see if they know of anything; and maybe trying
www.music.indiana.edu/ddm (Doctoral dissertations in music online). Vincent
Duckles. Music reference and research materials, does not mention a
published list of Norwegian music theses; and there is no official Norwegian
musicological journal -- as far as I can tell! -- that might carry such
information.
7. I need to find out as much as I can about music in Iceland. Please help!
[Answer: quite a simple one, this: try the Icelandic MIC site at
www.mic.is.
I'm sure that I recently read about Icelandic music in the periodical
"Nordic Sounds", but it's not indexed online anywhere, and isn't available
in free text either. However, I might use this as an example to show that
the Internet can't answer *everything*.]
8. Is there a Swedish Wagner Society? How do I join?
[Answer: I used the Swedish search engine SUNET for this, under
katalogen.sunet.se/cat/entertainment/music. Search this site and you find
that there *is* a Swedish Wagner Society, at
www.swipnet.se/wagner/sws.
Another way to find the site is simply to do a search on yahoo, which brings
up the International Association of Wagner Societies at
www.richard-wagner-verband.de]
9. I'll be in Stockholm on 3 July, and would like to go to a classical concert.
What's on?
[Answer: look in www.stockholmtown.com, under "events", when "classical music". Only one concert is on that evening, at the Royal Palace at 1930. It features the music of Dvorak, and the soloist is Christine Hogman. Alternatively, www.konserthuset.se is a useful site, though rather more limited. I see that July is not a good month for concerts in Stockholm!!]
10. I want to study music at a university in Denmark. Where can I go? I'm particularly interested in studying composition.
[Answer: see www.penrose-press.com/idd/edu/music.html, which has links to several Danish universities. Alternatively you could use www.abo.fi/norden/knostvet/musik.htm, and search under "Denmark"]
11. Where are the autograph manuscripts of Johan Helmich Roman's works?
[Answer: search under Yahoo, for "Johan Helmich Roman" and "manuscripts", which reveals that the National Library of Sweden has many. Yahoo also mentions an entire book on Roman by Ingmar Bengtsson, available online at www.geocities.com/Broadway/2547/romans.html. I would also check online Grove, if you have access; as autograph mss are shown there with an * next to the library siglum.]
12. Where is Stravinsky buried?
[Answer: look at www.findagrave.com, and you will find he is in the Cimiterio di San Michele, Venice (Greek Orthodox section).]
13. I'm interested in Icelandic music. Can you help me?
[Answer: you could look at the Icelandic Music Information Centre home page; maybe better is the Ismus, a database of Icelandic music, including sound and video, at www.musik.is/ismus. This was advertised in the November 2001 issue of Nordic Sounds, which shows that it is important to keep a list of potentially useful sites in a notebook somewhere!]
